The nine EIA regions
EIA surveys by Petroleum Administration for Defense District (PADD), the regions it has used since the 1940s. The East Coast is reported whole and in three parts.

Every state
EIA publishes a weekly series for nine states. The other 41 and the District of Columbia are not surveyed on their own, so each is shown its PADD district's average and says so in the last column. Alphabetical; this site does not rank states.

What this figure is
Each Monday EIA surveys a sample of retail outlets and publishes the average pump price of regular gasoline, including all taxes, the next day. “All formulations” means conventional and reformulated gasoline together, weighted by what each area sells. It is an average of stations, not of gallons sold, and not the price at any particular pump; a station on an Interstate or in a city centre will usually be above it.
The figure here is a starting point for the fuel-price field on this site's calculators, with its week beside it. The price on the pump you actually use beats it every time, and the calculators take that instead.
cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG e.g. $4.28 ÷ 30 MPG = 14.3¢ a mile
