What this figure is

Every month utilities report their residential revenue and the kilowatt-hours they sold on Form EIA-861M. The price here is the one divided by the other for all of a state's utilities together, so it is an all-in average of what households were billed per kWh — energy, delivery and the fixed charges spread over the kWh — not the energy rate on any one tariff line. EIA publishes it about two months after the month ends, preliminary until the following year's annual data finalises it.

It is a starting point for the electricity-price field on this site's calculators, with its month attached. Your own bill's delivered rate, or a time-of-use overnight rate if you charge on one, is the figure that counts, and the calculators take that instead.

cost per mile = price per kWh ÷ miles per kWh
e.g. 18.2¢ ÷ 3.5 mi/kWh = 5.2¢ a mile
